(CEHURDES/IFEX) – On 27 March 2003, a group of unknown assailants brutally beat journalist Bijaya Bisphot, editor and publisher of “Shram Bulletin Weekly”, at his office in New Baneswar, Kathmandu. According to the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ), the assailants also looted two computers, a fax machine and other valuables from the office.
In a separate incident, journalist Lekhnath Bhandari reportedly received death threats over the telephone by a number of individuals, including Postal Service Department Assistant Secretary Khagendra Dhakal. Bhandari was reportedly targeted for publishing a contentious 27 March feature story in “Sanghu Weekly”.
CEHURDES condemns the brutal beating and death threats directed against the journalists for publishing news reports. CEHURDES urges the corresponding authorities to take action against the perpetrators and ensure that journalists can express themselves freely.
