(MISA/IFEX) – On 2 November 2000, the Zanzibari authorities charged Ally Saleh, the island-based correspondent for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), with kidnapping two women. Saleh denied the charge before the Vuga Regional Magistrate’s Court and was released on bail.
The prosecution is alleging that the veteran journalist kidnapped two women in a Zanzibar suburb on 29 October and held them against their will for three and a half hours.
The charge stems from a story which Saleh broke on the BBC on 29 October, which included interviews with the two women who were alleged to have been kidnapped. The story involved claims of election fraud and allegations that people from one constituency were bussed in by the ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi, to fraudulently vote in other constituencies.
Saleh will appear in court again on 30 November.
Background Information
Saleh was arrested on 1 November and held at the Mwembemadema Central Police station for about twelve hours before being charged and released on bail.
