(IFJ/IFEX) – The IFJ is expressing great concern at the continued refusal of
the FRY authorities to grant visas to foreign correspondents.
According to the IFJ’s information, Peter Furst of the Swiss newspaper
“Tages Anzeiger” was recently refused a visa because Belgrade considers him
persona non grata due to his coverage of the war and politics in the former
Yugoslavia. These grounds for rejecting his visa application were
communicated to the Swiss Embassy in Belgrade by the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
The IFJ believes that the refusal to grant a visa to this correspondent is
based on Belgrade’s desire to silence all critical voices whether inside or
outside the country. We consider this refusal to be a direct attack on
freedom of expression.
