(RSF/IFEX) – RSF has called for the immediate release of Edward Ladu Terso, a journalist from the English-language daily “Khartoum Monitor”, who has been detained by state security police without explanation since 11 March 2003.
“He appears to have simply been doing his job,” said RSF Secretary-General Robert Ménard. “The authorities have not accused him of any offence. We deplore the security services’ relentless pursuit of the paper, an issue of which was recently seized.”
State security officials told the newspaper on 15 March that Terso had been sent to Kober prison. The journalist writes a column called “I just cannot understand it”. The next day, the Prosecutor-General’s Office said the state security services’ political section was holding him. The paper said Terso has no political affiliation. He has worked for “Khartoum Monitor” since 2000.
The authorities seized copies of the paper at the printers on 9 March. State security police summoned publisher Nhial Bol and Terso for questioning later the same day (see IFEX alert of 11 March 2003). On 10 March, the police said the issue was seized because of an article by Terso that said the history of Islam in Sudan had not always been peaceful.
