(JED/IFEX) – On Wednesday 19 April 2000, the Lubumbashi High Court (in the province of Katanga, some 2000 km south-east of Kinshasa), granted a temporary release to Donatien Nyembo Kimuni, publisher of the Lubumbashi newspaper “Le Libérateur Ujamaa” and provincial representative of the weekly “La Tribune” (published in Kinshasa and distributed in Lubumbashi).
The journalist, who was an inmate at the Kasapa Central Prison in Lubumbashi, had requested a temporary release because of his deteriorating health, a consequence of the poor treatment he was subject to while detained. According to information obtained by JED, Nyembo Kimuni was whipped during his detention at the National Information Agency (Agence nationale de renseignements, ANR).
