According to RSF’s information, on 13 December 1998, Norbert Zongo, chief editor of the private weekly “L’indépendant” was found dead in his vehicle, on the trail which links Sapouy to Ouagadougou. The journalist was accompanied by his brother, his chauffeur and one other person. The four bodies were charred inside the vehicle. The outside of the 4×4 was not burned. This said, the rear door was pierced with several holes which may have originated from a firearm.
Zongo, who had already received death threats, had recently published articles crticising authorities and accusing the head of state’s brother of bearing some responsibility in the death of his chauffeur. The journalist was also president of the private press editors company.
