Journalist Gao Yu, detained since 2 October 1993 and sentenced
last November to six years in jail for “leaking state secrets”,
is in poor health because the Yanqing prison authorities are not
providing her with medical treatment for angina pectoris and
Meniere’s disease. Furthermore, Ms. Gao is being detained in a
cell with other prisoners sentenced for murder and robbery. This
practice is in violation of the United Nations Standard Minimal
Rules for the treatment of prisoners (1957).
Although details of the charges against Gao have never been
disclosed, they are believed to be based on articles published in
the Hong Kong-based “Mirror Monthly”, a Chinese-language magazine
which ironically takes a pro-Beijing editorial stance. An appeal
of her sentence was rejected by the Beijing Higher People’s Court
on 23 December 1994.
