(RSF/IFEX) – On 5 and 6 June 1998, a tract containing injurious and
defamatory statements against Guy Benhamou, journalist with the daily
“Liberation”, was circulated outside of a sports complex in Bercy during a
concert by a musical group from Corsica. In the tract, signed by the
“Cuncolta section of Paris” (“section de la Cuncolta de Paris”), Benhamou is
referred to, in particular, as a “exalter of colonialist information” and as
the “principal relayer of police information” (“principal relais
d’informations flicardes”) about Corsica. Benhamou was also accused of
encouraging “anti-Corsican racism.”
In March 1996, Benhamou’s home was the target of an attack using an armed
automatic weapon. In addition, both he and the editorial staff of
“Liberation” have received numerous threats by telephone and post following
the publication of articles about Corsica.
