agency Habana Press, was released on 23 September 1997 after
having been detained for 92 days. However, authorities did not
return to Peraza equipment – a computer, typewriter and camera –
seized duing his arrest in June.

Background Information
Peraza was arrested on 23 June by police in Pinar del Rio. No
charge was brought against the journalist (see IFEX alerts). The
conditions of Peraza’s imprisonment were reportedly difficult: he
was kept in a windowless cell along with two other detainees,
while family members and friends could only visit Peraza once a
week for fifteen minutes, and only in the presence of police.
Peraza is currently suffering from insomnia and troubles to his
nervous system.
