(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to Minister of the Interior Vladimir Turcanu, RSF expressed its concern about the 10 August 2000 attack on Vadim Iamalieant, a journalist with the private weekly “Vremia”. RSF Secretary-General Robert Ménard said: “We ask that you take the necessary measures to ensure that a thorough investigation is launched into this incident.” The organisation also asked to be kept informed of developments in the investigation.
According to information collected by RSF, Iamalieant was attacked with knives by unknown persons during the night of 9 to 10 August. He was found unconscious on one of the main streets of Chisinev, the country’s capital, on the morning of 10 August. The journalist was admitted that same day to a Chisinev hospital, where he has yet to regain consciousness. An investigation has been launched to determine the motive for the attack. Iamalieant is known for his caricatures of, and critical articles about Moldovan politicians.
