(JED/IFEX) – On 4 April 2009, Jean-Pierre Katende, a journalist with Radio Télévision de l’Eglise Evangélique Libre d’Afrique (RTEELDA), a religious*broadcaster based in Mbuji-Mayi, capital of Western Kasai province, in central DR Congo, was briefly detained by the National Intelligence Agency’s (Agence Nationale des Renseignements, ANR) local branch.
According to JED, the ANR blamed Katende for inviting Frank Mpoyi, provincial president of the Convention des Congolais Indépendants (CCI) political party, to participate in a programme that aired on 3 April.
Earlier, Mpoyi had denounced allegations of fraud committed during the 1 April Western Kasai parliamentary elections. He had stated that Western Kasai province was led by a “group of friends”, while also claiming to have evidence that a number provincial MPs were corrupt. Katende was released at 7:00 p.m (local time) on 4 April after making a statement.
