(RSF/IFEX) – On 28 October 1997, Joseph Habyarimana, editor of
the magazine “Indorerwamo”, was arrested and detained in a
dungeon in the Cyahafi section of Nyarugenge, Kigali, where he
was allegedly assaulted. Habyarimana was then transferred to the
Kigali Central Prison during the week of 3 November.
Habyarimana was accused of writing an article published under a
pseudonym in the December 1996 edition of the kinyarwanda-
language newspaper “Intego”. Entitled “Secteur Cyahafi: ou en
est-on ?”, the article reported on pressure made through the
chief of the Cyahafi sector by a so-called “Immaculee”, with the
intention of obtaining the arrest of Hutus accused of taking part
in the 1994 genocide. The article ended by calling on the
population to live in harmony, in spite of ethnic strife.
