(RSF/IFEX) – RSF is concerned by the kidnapping of a Sri Lankan
journalist.
According to RSF’s information, on 14 March 1999, in Colombo, three men
entered
the room of Sirilal Priyantha, journalist with the weekly “Lakbima,” and
kidnapped him. He was later found in a cemetery, bleeding, semiconscious
and
with his hands and legs bound. Priyantha is currently being treated in
hospital. Apparently the abductors asked for a tape regarding of one of
his
news articles. The journalist has extensively written about corruption
in
the country. According to sources, one of his friends made a complaint
just
after the kidnapping but the police did not take any interest in the
case.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to the President:
and
arrested and that they are severely punished if they attacked Sirilal
Priyantha because of what he wrote in his newspaper
