(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to the minister of the interior, Sheikh Mohammed al-Hamad al-Sabah, RSF expressed its deep concern following the murder of Hudaya Sultan al-Salem, owner and editor-in-chief of the weekly “al-Majales”. RSF Secretary-General Robert Ménard called on the minister “to ensure that an inquiry is quickly carried out and those responsible for this attack are arrested and prosecuted.”
According to information collected by RSF, on 20 March 2001, al-Salem was murdered while she was going to her office by car, driven by her driver. According to the Kuwaiti press agency (KUNA), the assailant shot at her three times and then escaped. According to some sources from the security services, the four men who allegedly shot at her have handed themselves over to the police.
al-Salem was the first woman journalist in Kuwait when she started to work in 1961. Aged 65 years, she died in hospital from her injuries.
