(RSF/IFEX) – According to information collected by RSF, on 26 January 2000, Ahmed Kafi Awale, a commentator with radio station Radio of the Somali People, was shot dead by thieves while reporting in Mogadishu’s Bakara market. Three other people were killed and seven others were injured. The criminals took flight when market guards returned fire.
Radio of the Somali People is controlled by south Mogadishu warlord Hussein Mohamed Aidid. Since the start of the war, several heads of the clans which have divided up the country’s territory between them have attempted to control Somalia’s few remaining media.
Ahmed Kafi Awale is the third journalist to be killed world-wide since the start of 2000, and the first in Africa. No Somali journalists had died in the course of their work since the death of Mohamed Abdi Afgoye (Radio Mogadishu) in a 1993 attack by United Nations peacekeepers.
