(IPI/IFEX) – According to IPI, Sayomchai Vijitwittayapong, who worked for
the daily newspaper “Matichon”, was found shot to death on 10 January 1998,
in his car in the city of Phichit (in central Thailand). According to the
publishers of “Matichon”, the journalist
had agreed to meet with a person after receiving a “mysterious phone call”
the day before his murder. On an earlier occasion, Vijitwittayapong had
turned down a bribe offer of 150,000 Bath (approx. US$ 8,000) to stop
investigations into allegations of corruption related to a building project.
