JOURNALIST KILLED
Police recovered the body of a Rupgonj Thana correspondent of the daily Jugantor from a canal in the Gandhapur area of Rupgonj Thana yesterday morning, (July 22, 2001). The victim was identified as Ahsan Ali (age 40), son of Idu Mia, and resident of Barapa Ariabo village in the Narayangonj district. Information from local citizens helped police to recover the body from the canal adjacent to a local high school at around 11 a.m. yesterday. The victim’s hands and legs were tied with rope and his face and part of his chest had been burnt by acid. Police also recovered his camera beside his body.
Shadia Akhter, Ahsan’s wife, said that Ahsan left his house at 2 p.m. on July 20 and had been missing since. She also said that Ahsan had an enmity with his cousin over a land dispute and that a group of local youths had threatened him a few days ago for publishing news about extortion by local youths in the Rupgonj area. She felt that these might be the reasons behind his killing.
