(WAN/IFEX) – In a 3 May 2001 letter to Nigerian President Olusegen Obasanjo, WAN and the World Editors Forum expressed their outrage at the murder of journalist Rockfeller Okeke.
According to reports, on 25 April, Okeke, an editor with the state-run News Agency of Nigeria, was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Ukpo, Anambra State. The gunmen opened fire on Okeke as he was entering his house, killing him on the spot. The police have so far failed to establish a motive for the killing.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to the president:
– urging him to ensure that a thorough investigation into the murder of Okeke is carried out and that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice
– urging him to do everything in his power to create an environment in which journalists are able to carry out their profession free from violence
