(NUSOJ/IFEX) – NUSOJ is shocked by the killing of journalist Hassan Kafi Hared in Kismayu town of the Lower Jubba region, on 28 January 2008.
Hared, 36, died around 1.00 p.m. (local time) when a remote-controlled mine exploded in a road in Siyad Village, in the northern Kismayu. Two doctors with Medecins Sans Frontières-Holland and their Somali driver: also died in the attack. Parts of journalist’s body were scattered on both sides of the road. An eyewitness said that the mine exploded on the side of the road where the journalist was walking.
The journalist was on his way to a press conference and was working for Somali National News Agency (SONNA), a Somali government run news agency, and the Somali website http://www.gedonet.com
Hared, a long-time member of NUSOJ, was the treasurer of the organisation’s south-eastern branch. He is survived by a wife and three children.
“We denounce this outrageous attack that killed our colleague, Hassan Kafi Hared, and the humanitarian aid workers,” said Omar Faruk Osman, NUSOJ Secretary General. “This was a targeted attack and we declare that this brutal killing of the journalist and the aid workers is an attack on society itself”.
“We demand that the Transitional Government and the authorities in Kismayu identify the culprits of this crime and bring them to justice” Omar declared.
