First victim-journalist in the Second Chechen War
According to the report of Musa Muradov, editor-in-chief of the newspaper
“Groznensky Rabochiy”, on 27 October 1999, in Grozny, Supian Ependiyev, a
correspondent with the newspaper, was mortally wounded by rocket fire. After
several missiles burst in the middle of town, the journalist went to the
scene of action. He intended to prepare a report, but was wounded by
fragments of the next missile that was shot. Ependiyev’s condition was very
serious when he was taken to the 9th Grozny ER Hospital. On 29 October, he
died.
Ependiyev is the first journalist to be killed while covering the second
Russian military campaign in the Chechen Republic. From November 1994 to
September 1996, 20 journalists working in the Chechen Republic were killed.
