Cameraman Alhaji Zakariya Isa was killed by three gunmen suspected to be members of the radical Islamic sect locally known as Boko Haram.
(MRA/IFEX) – On 22 October 2011, at about 8.00 p.m. local time, Alhaji Zakariya Isa, a cameraman with the federal government-owned Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), was killed by three gunmen, suspected to be members of the radical Islamic sect locally known as Boko Haram, at his residence in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital in northeastern Nigeria.
The gunmen were said to have arrived in an unmarked vehicle and demanded to see Zakariya, whereupon one of the suspects pulled out a Kalashnikov rifle from a flowing gown and fired several shots into the journalist’s head and chest at the entrance to his house.
The sect is reported to have threatened to target reporters after it claimed that spokesmen who were not part of the sect were being quoted by the media.
