(IFJ/IFEX) – On 12 August, Maurizio Giuliano, an Italian journalist based in
Belgium, was stopped by customs officials, and all his films, tapes and some
notes were confiscated. Officials also took a list of IFJ member unions. The
materials taken by officials include the following: one developed film
strip, containing photographs of National League for Democracy leader Aung
San Suu Kyi; another developed film strip; twelve undeveloped films, which
include photographs taken in Cambodia; and three audio tapes, including
recordings made in Cambodia. Of the 12 undeveloped films, several cannot be
developed using traditional developing techniques.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to authorities:
expression
via either the Italian Embassy in Burma or the offices of the IFJ in
Brussels
the relevant processing technique so that none of the photos is destroyed
