(GDF/IFEX) – On 8 June 1998, around 9 pm local time, unknown individuals
burst into the home of journalist Meirkhaim Gavrielov, beating and then
strangling him with an iron wire.
Gavrielov, 70, was a noted journalist who had worked for the Tajik media for
more than fifty years. At the time of his murder, Gavrielov was
editor-in-chief of the Tajik Agrarian University newspaper “Donish”, a
position he held since 1979. He was also the author of several books and a
member of the Bukharian (Central Asian) Jewish Section of the Writers Union
of Tajikistan.
According to GDF, more than sixty journalists have been killed in Tajikistan
since 1992.
