On 26 July 1996, police arrested Metin Yasar Oglu, a journalist
for the newspaper “Mukhalifat”. He was covering a demonstration
that took place in front of the Russian Embassy in the capital,
Baku, in which people were protesting against the reported ill-
treatment of Azeri citizens in Moscow and other cities in the
Russian Federation. Oglu was arrested during the dispersal of the
protestors by local police, who damaged and confiscated his
camera equipment in the process. Oglu is currently in police
custody.
