On 2 March 1995, Nestor Baguer, an independent journalist and
president of the Independent Association of Journalists of Cuba
(APIC), was attacked by an unknown individual outside his home in
Havana. The assailant pushed him off the pavement into the
street, causing a fracture to his right wrist and severe bruising
to his ribs. According to Index on Censorship, the attack
occurred a few days after Nestor Baguer was to attend a function
to mark the opening of a book exhibition organized by the
American Association of Publishers. Several other people reported
having difficulty getting in to the event, either because their
invitations were unexpectedly cancelled, or they were refused
entry at the door. Those denied access included some of the
organizers of the event, reports Index on Censorship.
