(JED/IFEX) – In a Tuesday 18 April 2000 ruling, the Lubumbashi/Kamalondo Court of first instance forbade Donatien Nyembo Kimuni, publisher of the newspaper “Le Libérateur Ujamaa” and provincial representative of the newspaper “La Tribune” in Katanga, from leaving the city of Lubumbashi until further notice. Nyembo Kimuni, who was granted a temporary release from prison that same day, is required not to change residence and must present himself to the above-mentioned court whenever he is asked to do so. He has also been ordered to pay the court a security bond of 2000 FC (2000 Congolese Francs, approx. US$222 at the official exchange rate) bail. This expense was borne by JED. A JED delegation visited Lubumbashi from 19 to 24 April, attending a workshop on the media’s role in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s peace process.
Nyembo Kimuni is being prosecuted for “harmful accusations” and “contempt of court”. He is the author of two articles criticising, respectively, the activity of the local management of the National Information Agency (Agence nationale de renseignements, ANR) – during the mandate of President Laurent-Désiré Kabila’s deceased younger brother – and the administration of the justice system in Katanga province.
