(RSF/IFEX) – On 27 May 1998, Ariel Tapia, a journalist with the news agency
Cuba Press, was ordered by the head of the Monitoring and Protection Unit
(Sistema Unico de Vigilancia y Proteccion, SUVP) to meet with him. The SUVP
is composed of officials from the Ministry of the Interior, the Committee
for the Defence of the Revolution and the Communist Party. In April, the
same head of SUVP had stated during a meeting that, “in this area is someone
who belongs to the so-called group of independent journalists who are
financed by imperialism.”
This is the first official order for a meeting directed at a journalist
since the visit of Pope John Paul II in January.
