(JED/IFEX) – On Monday 21 February 2000, Nicaise Kibel’Bel, publisher of the newspaper “Les Coulisses”, which is published in Goma (North Kivu province’s main city), was questioned in court for four hours by magistrate Wabo, further to a request by Jean-Marie Emungu, who oversees the Department of Justice of the Congolese Rally for Democracy rebel movement (Rassemblement congolais pour la démocratie, RCD).
According to information received by JED, Emungu filed a complaint against journalist Kibel’Bel and his newspaper because of an article titled “For a 50 million dollar contribution from Mr. Van Brink, the RCD mortgages the Congo for 60 years”. During the interrogation, the examining magistrate wanted to know the source of the information published by the newspaper “Les Coulisses”.
Ten days ago, Joseph Mudumbi, who oversees the RCD’s Department of the Interior, had threatened to “personally take care” of “Les Coulisses”‘s publisher.
