(APG/IFEX) – According to the CERIGUA news agency, on 11 August 1999, Marta
Arrivillaga de Carpio, the president and general manager of “El Gráfico”
newspaper, announced that she had received death threats.
The threats appear to be motivated by “El Gráfico”‘s publication of certain
information from the National Security Archive (Archivo Nacional de
Seguridad, NSA). According to the NSA, the former minister of defense,
General Mario Enriquez, is alleged to have disposed of military files to
destroy evidence that incriminated the military in illegal activities.
De Carpio was warned not to make any connection between NSA’s information
and her husband’s murder. The newspaper manager has been vigilant in her
efforts to have some light shed on the assassination of her husband,
journalist Jorge Carpio Nicolle, a crime which still remains unpunished (see
IFEX alerts of 12 August 1998 and 26 February 1997).
News of the threats was distributed by CERIGUA and by other media.
