(IFJ/IFEX) – On Sunday, 28 March 1999, journalist Martín Mendoza Reyes
denounced that his life is in danger, as a result of his having provided
proof of corruption by National Customs Management (Superintendencia
Nacional de Aduanas, SUNAD) high officials, who are involved in
smuggling.
Mendoza worked for SUNAD for three years. During that time he gathered
documentary evidence that was brought to the Anti-smuggling Commission,
headed by the current Minister of Labour, Jorge Mufarech. In his
denunciation, Mendoza explained that SUNAD had begun a slander and
misinformation campaign against Mufarech, who has asked governmental
authorities to put an end to these acts of corruption.
To prevent an attempt against his life, Mendoza is accompanied by
security
personnel. He has asked for guarantees that he be allowed to continue
reporting on this campaign against corruption by officials who appear to
be
involved in smuggling.
