(CMFR/IFEX) – A journalist in Bacolod City, south of Manila, was sent threatening messages on his mobile phone by unknown persons in the last week of June 2005.
Jaime Espina, a contributor to the online news site http://www.abs-cbnnews.com, said the threats came after he was interviewed on local radio station Aksyon Radyo about the killings of journalists.
During the interview, Espina cited a conversation he had with Colonel Jogy Leo Fojas, who is based in Negros Occidental province. Espina said that when he asked Fojas to comment on the increasing number of human rights violations in the province, the colonel implied that nothing could be done about the situation. Espina quoted Fojas’ response in explaining worsening civil liberties conditions.
According to http://www.abs-cbnnews.com, Espina later received messages from a mobile phone warning him that his family would be killed and he would have to write about it.
Espina was not sure who was behind the death threats, although he believes that whoever was responsible knew they were sending messages to a journalist.
