(RSF/IFEX) – On 3 January 2000, Moe Thu was allegedly released from the Insein jail. A journalist with the business magazine “Danna”, writer and filmmaker, he had been arrested in May 1996 after participating in an opposition rally of the National League for Democracy (NLD), of which he was a member.
Arrested under Article 10 (a) of the State Protection Law of 1975, he was detained for three and half years without being sentenced. According to the Burmese authorities, Moe Thu, 62, was freed on humanitarian grounds. His wife died a few weeks ago.
Twelve journalists are currently jailed in Burma.
