(PPF/IFEX) – On 12 January 1998, Iftikhar Adil, the publisher/printer of
the daily Lahore-based newspaper “Lashkar” who is facing contempt of court
charges, was released. The release orders were issued by the division bench
of Balochistan High Court on the appeal of Iftikhar Adil against the verdict
of a single bench of this court. The bench, allowing the appeal of Adil,
ordered his release, saying that the days passed by him in jail were
adequate for his punishment. The appeal of Mr. Irfananul Haq, “Lashkar”
chief news editor, was heard on 13 January. The court reserved judgement on
his appeal and he remains in jail.

Background Information
On 26 December 1997, Irfanul Haq and Iftikhar Adil, two journalists of the
Lahore based Urdu newspaper “Lashkar”, were sentenced to six months in
prison and fined Rs. 5000 by the Balochistan High Court in Quetta for
reporting on the alleged theft of court records.
