(RSF/IFEX) – According to RSF, on 16 January 1998, Samuel Eleme, publication
director of the magazine “La Detente”, was convicted of “defamation” and
sentenced to three years in prison and a fine of 10,000FF. This conviction
follows from a series of articles published in October 1997 accusing John
Mandengue Epee, director of a Cameroonian insurance company, of having
committed a number of thefts in Nigeria before coming to Cameroon as a refugee.

Send appeals to President Biya:
Civil and Political Rights, Article 19 of which guarantees the freedom to
inform and be informed, as well as the African Charter of Human Rights,
Article 9 of which guarantees the same rights and calling on Cameroon to
respect these committments to the international community
