(MISA/IFEX) – According to information received variously from the National
Society of
Human Rights (NSHR) in Namibia and the Portuguese service of Channel Africa
radio, Simaon Roberto, a journalist for the government-owned “Journal de
Angola”, was gunned down in Luanda on 5 June 1998. Roberto was returning
from the State House, where he had covered a meeting of the council of
ministers, when he was killed. The NSHR reported to MISA that Roberto was
gunned down outside the offices of “Journal de Angola”. However, Channel
Africa told MISA that Roberto was driving when the attack happened and that
the attackers made off with his car in an apparent robbery. The police are
reportedly investigating the murder.
