(FNJ/IFEX) – Lalit Rai, a correspondent of the weekly newspaper “Majhkharka”, was attacked in the area of Rampur Thoksila in Udayapur, an eastern district of Nepal, on 1 January 2007 by local resident Durga Bahadur Khatry, for his news reportage.
According to Ishwor Tamang, president of the Udaypur branch of the FNJ, Rai was stabbed with a khukuri – a long curved knife – for disseminating news about the marketplace of the area. Khatry, a local vendor, went to Rai’s home and stabbed him, asking why Rai had written about the marketplace. Rai is currently being treated at a local health post.
The FNJ has condemned the attack and has urged the local authorities to take action against Khatry.
