The summons stemmed from an interview Elenga conducted with the Tanganyika District police commissioner two months ago regarding judicial corruption.
(JED/IFEX) – On 5 June 2009, Saidi Kaka Elenga, a journalist at the private radio station Community Radio of Kongolo (RCK) was questioned at the Kongolo prosecutor’s office, approximately 800 km north of Lubumbashi, the capital of Katanga province. Elenga was questioned from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (local time) following a summons from the deputy state prosecutor.
The summons stemmed from an interview Elenga conducted with the Tanganyika District police commissioner two months ago regarding judicial corruption in the region. In the interview, the police commissioner told Elenga that purging the corrupt judicial sector was one of his priorities.
When contacted by JED, Elenga said that he did not understand why he was being questioned two months after the airing of the interview.
Elenga was released after five hours in detention on condition that he return to the prosecutor’s office the following day with RCK’s director of programming.
