On 28 May 1996, Thierno Sadou Diallo, a reporter for the bi-
weekly “Le Citoyen”, was taken in for questioning by Guinean
authorities. He was later detained, and is currently being held
in solitary confinement, without charge, in Conakry central
prison. Diallo’s arrest follows an article published in the 20
May edition of “Le Citoyen” which alleged that, in early
February, a police officer had stolen a suitcase belonging to
President Lansana Conte and which contained a diamond worth 50
million Guinean francs (approximately US$ 5000). Meanwhile, there
is speculation that other journalists of “Le Citoyen” could face
harassment from authorities in the coming days.
