(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to Minister of the Interior Vladimir Turcan, RSF expressed its concern over threats made to journalist Andrei Turcanu, a regular contributor to the opposition weekly “Messagerul”. “We ask you to take all necessary measures to ensure the security of the journalist,” declared Robert Ménard, the organisation’s secretary-general, adding that “four journalists have been attacked in 1999 and many others have been threatened.”
According to information obtained by RSF, unknown persons threatened to “liquidate [Turcanu] and his family, if he continued to write.” In June 2000, the journalist published a report in the weekly “Messagerul” denouncing the corruption of certain government departments. Turcanu is known for his investigations into affairs of corruption and smuggling. According to a survey undertaken in Moldavia, more than fifty-eight percent of journalists do not feel protected in the practice of their profession.
