(IPYS/IFEX) – The Radio Señorial news director, Ricardo Bullon, who was
recently suspended, denounced the fact that he has been receiving death
threats over the telephone.
**Updates IFEX alert of 23 August 1999**
The journalist, who manages the radio programme “Testigo de la Noticia”, in
the city of Huancayo, informed IPYS that, on 25 August 1999, he received
three anonymous telephone calls, warning him: “We are going to have you
disappeared.” On the previous day, Bullon had received five threatening
telephone calls at his home.
Although the number of anonymous calls increased after 24 August, the
journalist had been receiving threats for a week prior to that date. Between
19 and 22 August, he received five malevolent messages over the telephone.
Background Information
Bullon reported on irregularities allegedly committed by the former
president of the Huancayo Social Welfare Society, Janina Soria de Vélez.
Following his report, on 16 August, he was sentenced by Judge Mérida Sotelo
who presides the First Huancayo Criminal Court and found guilty of insulting
and defaming another. Bullon received a two year suspended prison sentence,
was ordered to pay 15,000 nuevos soles (approximately US$ 4,500) and was
prohibited from carrying out any journalist work for two years.
