(CEHURDES/IFEX) – On 29 December 2004, a local resistance group in the Nepal-India border area, which was formed to oppose the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN-Maoist) rebels, threatened to kill journalist Krishna Bahadur Karki in Nawalparasi district, western Nepal. Karki, president of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists’ (FNJ) Nawalparasi section, who received the threat via a telephone call, was accused of publishing false information.
In a separate incident, Nepal Police officer Padam Budha assaulted Bhupendra Shahi, a district correspondent for the daily “Gorakhapatra”, and Naman Kumar Shaki, a representative of the Kathmandu-based human rights organisation Informal Sector Service Center (INSEC). The incident occurred in Dailekh district, western Nepal, on 2 January, while the two were taking photographs of a site in the Salleri Village Development Committee, where the CPN-Maoist rebels had reportedly killed a member of the Nepali Congress Party, Dil Bahadur Rana.
CEHURDES condemns threats and attacks on journalists. The organisation urges the security agencies to respect press freedom, freedom of expression and citizens’ civil liberties.
