(IPYS/IFEX) – Bacario Alejandro Bautista Yucra, a correspondent of the
Lima-based radio station Radio Union and host of the news programme
“Contacto A” on the Palpa station Radio Studio A, is seeking the protection
of district authorities in Palpa, a city in Ica department (located south
of the Peruvian capital, Lima.) On 9 November 1998, an unknown assailant
verbally and physically assaulted Bacario Bautista while he was covering a
story. The assailant also threatened him with death. The journalist is
worried, fears for his safety and has gone into hiding.
The journalist told IPYS that he has been carrying a series on his show
about the drug and delinquency problems plaguing Palpa’s population.
Specifically, a few days prior to the assault, he had broadcast a long
report on the micro-commercialisation of drugs and the assaults which have
been happening on an almost daily basis in Palpa; these have reportedly not
received the proper attention from authorities.
