Rupa Sharma "Neha" received the threat over her coverage of women's issues in a magazine.
(Freedom Forum/IFEX) – Journalist Rupa Sharma “Neha”, who is associated with the Metro FM station, recently received a death threat from an unknown individual over an article she published in a fortnightly magazine in the capital city, Kathmandu.
According to Metro FM, Neha received the threat because of her coverage of women’s issues.
This is obviously a violation of press freedom and journalists’ right to report on the news, says Freedom Forum. Issuing a death threat merely because one is dissatisfied over an article shows that people are not seeking legal recourse but instead turn their aggression against the journalist in question. Incidents of this type sow fear among journalists which results in self-censorship.
Freedom Forum condemns the incident and urges the concerned local administration to arrest the culprits and mete out the appropriate sanctions.
