(CPJ/IFEX) – According to CPJ, at 9a.m. on 31 March 1998, Dennis Smith,
former on-air broadcaster with the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service (SLBS),
Gipu Felix George, former Director of SLBS, Olivia Mensah, former newscaster
with SLBS, Maada Maka Swaray, former newscaster with SLBS and William Smith,
a reporter with “We Yone”, an
AFRC-financed newspaper, appeared in Magistrate Court Number One, presided
over by Judge Mrs. Claudia Taylor. Hilton Fyle, owner of WBIG-FM103, had his
name officially read in court, but he did not appear.

All the journalists are currently being detained at Pademba Road Prison in
Freetown. The case was postponed until 6 April 1998 because all the
defendants were not in court.
