(CPJ/IFEX) – On 11 December 1998, Mildred Hancile, a reporter and production
assistant with SLBS, Conrad Roy, an editor with “Expo Times” newspaper, Mano
Mbompa Turay, editor of the now-defunct “Eagle” newspaper, and Amadu Jalloh,
a senior journalist with “Liberty Voice” newspaper, appeared for the first
time in the Magistrates’ Court among twenty two civilians facing charges
ranging from treason and aiding and abetting the enemy to conspiring to
overthrow a legally-constituted government. The charges against the
journalists were read aloud as part of the “preliminary investigation” phase
of the judicial process. The journalists are expected to make a second
appearance in the Magistrate’s Court on 18 December 1998 when the cases are
expected to be passed on to the High Court which has the jurisdiction to
hear treason cases, impanel jurors, receive evidence, and grant sentences.
The trial is expected to be completed in approximately two months.
