(CEHURDES/IFEX) – On 18 October 2003, the security forces once again arrested Subhashankar Kandel at his residence in Banasthali, Kathmandu. He was released the next day. Kandel, executive editor of the weekly “Janadharana”, had previously been arrested on 9 September and then released on 1 October. Kandel is associated with the Image Metro television station.
In a separate incident, on 11 October, security forces detained journalist Sharad Adhikari for approximately one hour in Kusum, Banke district. Adhikari was taken into custody while gathering information following a clash between Communist Party of Nepal (CPN-Maoists) rebels and security forces in the region. Police Inspector Ram Bahadur Thapa arrested Adhikari, alleging that he was tied to the CPN-Maoists. Adhikari has been working as a reporter for “Space Time Daily” in Dang district. He is under surveillance by the security forces.
CEHURDES condemns the arrests and urges the authorities and security forces to stop their harassment of journalists and free expression activists.
