(PPF/IFEX) – On 18 April 1999, Punjab Union of Press correspondents
condemned the arrest and detention of journalists Shamsul Haq and Rana
Jaffar Hussain by Muridke (a town in Punjab province) police. The
journalists were detained under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO)
law.
They claimed that the cases registered against them were false.
Local journalists said that by resorting to such methods, the police
will
not succeed in suppressing the journalism community from reporting on
the
misdeeds of local police. They urged the Prime Minister and the
Federal
Minister for Information to immediately withdraw the false cases and
release
the journalists. Both the journalists were under detention at the
district
jail in Sheikhupura.
