(MISA/IFEX) – The following is a joint MISA-MFWA alert:
On 30 April 2004, journalists Yves Kpéto, of Nana FM radio station, and K. Amouzouvi, of the weekly newspaper “Le Combat du Peuple”, were physically assaulted by state security forces at the Université de Lomé campus. The two journalists were covering a demonstration by university students who were pressing for better work and living conditions.
According to MFWA-Togo, the two journalists sustained severe bruises all over their bodies.
On 5 May, Nana FM radio station staff went on strike to protest the assault on their colleague Kpéto by state security forces. MFWA-Togo sources reported that since the morning of 5 May, Nana FM staff have been playing music exclusively, to express sympathy for their colleague and draw attention to the frequent, arbitrary use of force by state security agents against journalists and the media in Togo.
