(RSF/IFEX) – According to information obtained by RSF, on 9 and 10 November
1998, at least eleven journalists and photographers in Dakha were attacked
by pro-opposition activists and policemen as the country was the scene of a
two-day strike.

On 10 November, Tarif Rahman, of “The Independent”, Anisur Rahman, of the
daily “Star”, Nurun Nabi Robi, of “Dainik Janakhanta”, Sanjeev Basak, of
“Dainik Muktakantha”, and Samin Noor, of “Ajker Kagoj”, were assaulted with
sticks by political militants. They were slightly injured. The day before,
activists of the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) and its ally
Jammat-i-Islami, attacked four photographers. Shafiuddin Ahmed Bitu, of
“Dainik Inqilab”, was seriously injured and operated on in a Dakha hospital.
Meanwhile, Farhad Hossain, of “New Nation”, was wounded by flying stones
while Khaled Mahmud, of “Dainik Dinkal”, and Emran Hossain, of Daily Star,
were hurt by activists. Several vehicles marked “Press” in red were
assaulted and two were torched. Sohan and Khair, photographers with “Dainik
Ittefaq”, were assaulted by a police officer.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to authorities:
Khaleda Zia, chairperson of the BNP, in order that they ask their militants
not to attack or mishandle journalists and photographers who perform their
duties
political demonstrations without fear from political activists and policemen
