(CPJ/IFEX) – On 16 May 1998, between midnight and 1:00 a.m. (local time),
editor Deissa Sall and photographer Cire Sow of the independent “Nouvel
Horizon” were assaulted by socialist militants in the home of Abdoulaye
Diack, head of the Socialist Party
in the Kaolack legislature (in eastern Senegal). The journalists were
covering the electoral campaign in that region. During the assault
2,350,000.00 CFA (US$4,000) worth of equipment was destroyed.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to President Biya:
asking that those found guilty of this assault are duly prosecuted
Civil and Political Rights, Article 19 of which guarantees the freedom to
inform and be informed, as well as the African Charter of Human Rights,
Article 9 of which guarantees the same rights and calling on Cameroon to
respect these commitments to the international community
